Engine Design

The Skyactiv®-G engine is in a class of its own. Its available compression ratio of up to 14:1 puts it well above the 8:1 to 10:1 ratios found in many conventional engines. Dome-shaped pistons and multi-hole fuel injectors pull more usable energy from every drop of fuel instead of leaning on a turbocharger. You feel it as stronger pull off the line, whether you’re behind the wheel of a Mazda3 or a Mazda CX-5.

Transmission Tuning

Press the throttle hard and the Skyactiv®-Drive automatic answers by locking its torque converter earlier than a typical automatic transmission, holding onto the connected feel you’d expect from a manual gearbox. Mazda engineers cut roughly 16 percent of the weight out of the six-speed manual version compared to the transmission it replaced, so less mass sits right where it matters for handling. Either way you shift, the gear ratios sit close enough together that the engine stays in its power band, sharpening response when you merge onto a highway.

An Aerodynamic Body

The Skyactiv®-Body design you’ll find in many Mazda vehicles sheds weight and adds rigidity. That stiffer, lighter foundation gives the Skyactiv®-Chassis a more stable base to tune from, with suspension geometry dialed in for more precise steering at low speeds and more composure at highway speeds. It allows the cabin to stay planted on corners in your new Mazda model.
